In an age where data is pivotal, the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) has embarked on a transformative journey with the National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS). This initiative aims to revolutionize how fire data is collected, analyzed, and utilized, promising a new era of efficiency and insight for fire and emergency services.
The USFA, established by the Federal Fire Prevention and Control Act of 1974, has long recognized the need for a comprehensive system for fire data. The enactment of 15 USC 2208 paved the way for the National Fire Data Center, setting the stage for NERIS.
NERIS is the brainchild of a collaborative effort involving the USFA, the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate (DHS S&T), and the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI), a part of UL Research Institutes. This synergy aims to equip local fire and emergency services with real-time information and analytics tools for all-hazard incidents.
As a provider of cutting-edge fire department software, we at Station Boss are excited to announce our commitment to integrating with NERIS. Our SaaS platform will be fully compliant with NERIS, ensuring seamless data flow and enhanced decision-making capabilities for fire departments.

The development and implementation of NERIS follow a structured timeline:
The integration of Station Boss with NERIS marks a significant step forward in modernizing fire data management. This collaboration will empower fire departments with unparalleled data-driven insights, fostering a safer and more efficient future for emergency response services.
Stay tuned for more updates as we progress towards a fully integrated future with NERIS. Thank you for your continued support and trust in Station Boss.
No, NERIS is free like NFIRS.
No, NERIS is a reporting platform to combine data from all departments nationwide.
The incident reporting process will be much quicker. There will be a direct integration from Station Boss to the new NERIS platform, allowing incidents to be sent to the NERIS platform automatically in real-time. This means no more batching incidents. Additionally, NERIS will integrate with CAD platforms, providing real-time data.
Early stages of the platform will be released in 2024 if all goes well. The full release is expected sometime in 2025.
This is expected to happen sometime in 2024, assuming no delays. NFIRS will not go away until 2025, providing a transition period for vendors and departments to prepare their RMS systems and for states to perform trainings.
All 50 states participate in NFIRS currently, so it is safe to assume that all 50 states will participate in NERIS. NFIRS will be "turned off" at some point in 2025, so transitioning to NERIS will be necessary.
We are still waiting for official documentation, but early indicators show that the incident reporting process will be streamlined and auto-submission to NERIS will take place at the time of locking the incident reports.
